Hear from Deliberate Leaders

As Megan Lyons geared up to triple her team size, she grappled with decision-making pressures and concerns about meeting profitability targets.

Leading a company of 600 employees, Justin McNicholl realized he needed fresh perspectives to keep growing his business. He also struggled with staying focused and completing tasks.

Ryan Frasier was invited to buy Frasier Transport from his parents. The main challenge was to ensure a smooth ownership transition without disrupting the established company dynamics.

Steve Rausch struggled with solo law practice management, including marketing, client acquisition, workload management, and maintaining operational flow.

Dave Bailey struggled to market and grow his product. Despite believing in its potential, he was unsure about the next steps for expanding his business.

Ben Kalkman faced daily chaos. Consistent employee disagreements hindered operations and customer service. The lack of defined processes stressed him out.

Shellan Rodriguez felt scattered. She was constantly unsure about where to focus her efforts for maximum profitability and strategic growth. This led to inefficiency and anxiety.

Marc Davison and his wife successfully grew their medical imaging business, but they were uncertain about the company’s future direction and growth. They needed clarity and strategy.

Craig Almon felt felt his general insurance agency was not growing as fast as it should be.

We have a lot more 😉

Exploring Coaching

Business coaching helps CEOs; executive coaching helps other C-suite leaders.

Many CEOs hire Deliberate Directions for business coaching, then invest in executive coaching for their key players.

Your ROI on coaching depends on the work you do. Will you follow through on the commitments you make during your coaching sessions? The structure and accountability of coaching helps many people make changes they have known they need to make for a long time, but have been unable or unwilling to make by themselves.

Coaching is typically a marginal business investment.  Yet often people credit coaching with helping them double their income or radically improve numerous pain points in their business. Your ROI is ultimately something you deserve to take credit for. Coaching just facilitates it.

Deliberate Directions is committed to helping you find the right business coach for you, whether that is one of our coaches or any other coach.

To that end, we have prepared a list of the best business coaches. We’ve also interviewed dozens of executive coaches on the Deliberate Leaders podcast.

Deliberate Directions has prepared free resources to help you:

Choosing a Business Coach

Start by clearly defining your objectives. What specific goals do you want to achieve with the help of a coach?

Next, consider your preferred coaching style. Do you respond better to a direct and challenging approach, or do you prefer someone who is more supportive and nurturing?

Begin your search by looking for coaches who have experience in your area of interest. You can run a targeted search online, check professional directories, or ask within your network for recommendations.

Once you have a list of potential coaches, vet them by checking their reviews and credentials. Reviews from past clients can provide insight into their effectiveness and personal style, while proper credentials can confirm their professional qualifications. Don’t hesitate to ask for referrals from trusted colleagues. These provide firsthand insights that are often more reliable than online reviews.

After narrowing down your list, schedule consultations with the top candidates. Use these meetings to assess if there’s a personality fit and to learn about their coaching approach.

Trust your instincts. If a coach feels right during the consultation, they’re likely a good match. However, be open to trying different coaches if your first choice doesn’t meet your expectations.

For more detailed guidance, refer to our guide on finding the right executive coach for you.

First, make sure they have appropriate experience so that they can help you achieve your goals.

Next, look for a coach who shares your values and listens well. To open up about your goals and challenges, you need to find a coach who you can trust and talk to easily.

Finally, think of the mentors and coaches, friends and managers who motivated you to do your best work. At the end of the day, a great coach will ask you good questions and make you feel motivated.

Please schedule a complimentary strategy session.

Getting Started with Coaching

For your strategy session, consider these preparations:

  • Complete the business background questionnaire provided upon scheduling
  • Be ready to discuss your past experiences and future aspirations.

  • Outline your current challenges and goals.
  • Gather any relevant business or personal performance data to discuss.
  • Reflect on areas of your life or work you’re eager to improve.
  • Prepare questions you have about the coaching process.

If you’re attending on Zoom, ensure you have a quiet, private space.

Before your session, we’ll send you a questionnaire. Fill this out before the session so that we can have a productive conversation.

We will:

  • Get to know each other
  • Discuss your answers on the questionnaire
  • Talk about your personal and professional goals, and what might be holding you back
  • Determine what you could realistically achieve during a coaching engagement
  • Answer any questions you have about the coaching process

Commit to attend your coaching sessions. Share honestly and be open to feedback.

Work with your coach to set clear, achievable goals. Then follow through during the week: Take the actions you agreed to take.

If you do this, you’ll make great progress.

Additionally, we will recommend resources that will help you grow as a leader. If you listen to or read these, you’ll get even more out of your experience.

Coaching involves a series of steps that help you grow in your executive role or business.

First, you and your coach will talk about what you want to achieve. Your coach will ask questions to understand your needs. Together, you will plan how to tackle challenges and set specific goals.

You’ll meet with your coach regularly to discuss progress and make changes to your plan as needed. Your coach will give you advice and support along the way. They will help you stay focused and motivated, and they’ll teach you new skills to help you handle problems.

Our process requires your commitment. Providing you take action, you will get better at what you do and become a more effective leader.

The duration of a coaching engagement depends on the goals you set with your coach.

Most engagements last 2+ years. After that, some leaders decide to continue working on new goals with their coach. Or they hire Deliberate Directions to help executives on their staff become stronger in their roles.

First, we define what goals are important to you. We prefer to do this in the context of your broader personal mission and vision.

Any time we set a goal, we decide how it will be measured, what success looks like, what timetable is appropriate, and how often we’ll track the goal.

Each quarter, we evaluate your progress, and help you set new objectives. You can get guidance from a coach on how to achieve a goal that is important to you in a free strategy session.
